Insecure Writers' Support Group

Hello Again,

If it's the first Monday of the month, then I am home taking care of sick children. Again. For the third freakin' month in a row. In a row. Is anyone else experiencing a significant uptick in illnesses in their family? And yes, I did institute a Mommy-needs-to-work-so-entertain-yourselves campaign during Winter Break and it worked! (For almost 45 blissful minutes.)

This go around has been fairly mild with fevers and cold symptoms. I read a disturbing article on the web that the three flu strains plaguing the world are so different from one another that you could get the flu more than once this season (whether or not you've been vaccinated), or you could experience two different flu strains at the same time. Lovely.

But this is supposed to be about insecure writers not insecure mothers, so let me switch gears. Despite having only two out of the four weeks of February to work uninterrupted, I got a new short story finished and sent off to my editor. Spiffy.

Then I sent out the first five pages to my online critique group and the first reply had so many corrections I was both extremely grateful and completely horrified. Did I actually send that to my editor? I can't believe I sent that to my editor.

Anyway, I have three and a half weeks to polish that sucker till it shines, write up my blogs for the A to Z challenge, and prepare myself for Monday, March 30. Because my darlings have that entire week off, for Spring Break. There is not a font large enough for me to type my scream, so I will leave that to your imagination.

Toodles. (Please tell me people are accomplishing more than doctor's visits and Kleenex clean-ups out there.)

  1. I can hear your scream.

You have a lot of writing ahead of you. Pump some vitamin C down your kids and make it happen.

  2. This is the first year I decided not to get a flu vaccination. No particular reason other than just too dang busy, but so far, no flu or sickness here. Thank the wellness gods. But, we have plenty of other sicknesses to deal with other than the flu in my house. So, yeah, my plate is full too. But, it sounds like you're doing great keep. Keep it up!

  3. I'm sorry all the kids are sick. I hope they get better soon!

Good job on that short story! And I wish you luck with A-Z and Spring Break.

  4. It sounds like you have one full plate! Congratulate yourself on getting anything done with sick kids in the house. Brushing my teeth when I had that happening was a huge accomplishment and here you've written a story.

  5. I'm a mother of 5 daughters. They're now fully grown and live on their own. I can definitely hear that scream.

    Hugs and chocolate!

  6. I was sick all of December and could barely take care of myself. I'm awed you can handle sick kids and write. Go ahead and scream. Screaming is good; it releases pent up tension. :)

Best of luck with your story, and wishing you a very healthy spring break!

  7. I want to hug all the writer-parents of the world and then *poof* our children into a happy bubble where they all get along and aren't sick and don't need us to do anything for them for at least an hour. That would be beautiful. Just remember to channel all possible rage, angst, tantrums, etc., into your characters. And ice cream. Or wine. Don't forget those, because they are a mama's best friend and should be channeled directly into your body. It's good work ethic. Sending hope that March is rocking the write-on for you!

  8. I guess the children being sick meant you weren't 100% focused on your writing - which is as it should be :) At least your critique group is confident enough to say when it's not right :)

  9. Wow, and you still got that done with sick kids! Three months in a row? That is really pushing the envelop. I hope the "spate" of illness is done now, perhaps third times a charm? So excited to have you on our team for the A to Z. Really looking forward to this year. Let me know if you have any questions after you read all the "stuff" I just sent to you! LOL. Thanks for signing up!

  10. I'm not a mom, so I can't empathize on that account, but it definitely sucks when you get something back and you're like, "oh... you found all those mistakes did you? How... how thorough of you..." But hey, it's better the editor catches them rather than the reader. Keep up all the good work!

  11. That's awful about all the sickness. Poor kids and poor you! One of mine was sick over February vacation. There's so much nasty stuff going around.
Congrats on getting your short story out with all that going on. Good luck with your edits and A to Z!

  14. I've had sick winters, but thankfully I haven't gotten sick this season. I hope your children feel better soon.

I'm grateful for feedback, yet at the same time think "yikes" about making all the changes needed. I do it though. :)

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
