Question of the Month with Michael D'Agostino

Happy New Year! In honor of the new year, Michael asks,

What are some new year’s resolutions you’ve had in the past?

I pretty much have the same resolutions every January (and March, July, October, you get the picture).

1. Write more.

I have plenty of time to write. I'm at home. My kids go to school (occasionally). Where do the hours go? I do spend too much time surfing CNN, YouTube, and fiddling around with gmail. I do take incredibly long lunches, because I read while I eat. If I stay up too late, I nap. Basically, I need more discipline.

Once I do start working, I'm good to go, but getting in the groove takes time.

2. Eat less sugar.

The usual resolution is to lose weight. That means you need to burn more calories than you consume, over a long period of time. If you adopt an extreme diet (all grapefruit, wheatgrass, or brussel sprouts), you might drop pounds, but eventually, you'll crack, start eating other stuff, and eventually find yourself back where you started plus ten extra pounds. Yo-yo, baby. Been there, done that. So I'd like to focus on a different goal and see if that helps. But willpower is a serious issue. I have none.

3. Get rid of clutter.

I hate my house. Right now, as I type, my daughter is furiously (and fruitlessly) searching for something we bought several weeks ago. She's pissed and now I have to leave this blog and help her or she'll glom onto me and never let go. It's really hard to type with an 11-year-old strapped to your shoulder. So I must get rid of the clutter or we will all go mad searching for that illusive item that stands between us and true happiness.

  1. I've decided not to make any actual resolutions but mine are usually pretty close to yours. This year I'm just going to try to do the things I want to do and stop making excuses about them and putting them off.

  2. I hear you about health/weight. I'm aiming for more fruits and veggies and eating better overall. Good luck with everything!

  3. To really lose weight, it has to be a lifestyle change. If you're eating weird stuff just to lose weight quickly, yes, you'll go back to old habits when you stop.

  4. Get rid of the clutter. You'll feel better.

  5. Exercising more, as opposed to losing weight, is my goal. And perhaps accomplishing the one will lead to the other.

  6. The winter months always cut into my exercise and I have to think about drinking more water instead of just doing it. I've been getting rid of clutter a little at a time. Looks a little better every day.

  7. But those are all good resolutions to have each year. I've been working on the clutter and writing more. Less sugar, not so much. lol

  9. The eat less sugar is great for everyone. :)

If you want to take up oils again there's a product called Max Oils that can be cleaned up with water. It is a little different, but it's closer to traditional oils than it is acrylics. There's also Gamsol, in replacement to mineral spirits and other toxic clean up stuff. It's allergy safe. I get Gamsol for my students, so my classroom doesn't smell all toxic.

  10. If I were to make some resolutions they might be the same as yours. Though I love my house and it's not totally a disarray of clutter, we have way too much stuff and I'm always trying to get rid of stuff.

  11. I'm with you on the eat less sugar thing. We'll try it together, okay. I chose a word for the year. This one is Evolve. I hope you found the lost item!

  12. I don't do resolutions, but I can certainly relate to all of yours. I may not have an 11 but that doesn't mean piles of clutter and pieces of paper aren't multiplying like tribbles.

  15. I've lost forty pounds in the last three to four years. I've taken it off slowly so I don't gain it back. I feel much better, but I still have sixty pounds to lose so I can be me again. I'm highly organized. I like alphabetizing things. The clothes in my closet are arranged according to color and sleeve length. The shoes have their own little cubbies. You might start by giving away or selling clothes that you don't wear anymore. I give away clothes as I lose weight. Then I buy smaller sizes!

    Love,
    Janie

  19. Those are all great goals!!! Best of luck achieving them all this year. Less sugar is always the hardest.

  20. Sound like good goals! Sugar in particular--it is literally addicting, so if you can give it up, it is easier for the other eating to be healthier too. Congrats on being selected for the IWSG Anthology!!!!

  21. Procrastination is so frustrating. One motto I have is "The quickest way to get something done is to need to be doing something else."
