Celebrate the Small Things

Another week has past already? It's time to celebrate the small things with Lexa Cain and her cohosts: L.G. Keltner and Tonya Drecker!

1. This week I enjoyed the heck out of the third book in Justin Cronin's vampire trilogy: The Passage, The Twelve, and The City of Mirrors. If you like your vampires lethal and monstrous instead of sweet and sparkly, check these books out. Also recommended for fans of Stephen King's The Stand or other apocalyptic works. Not only does The City of Mirrors go for the throat, but the writing of this trilogy is superb. Rarely can a writer go off on a hundred page tangent giving the back story of a character and still keep you enthralled, but Cronin pulls it off.

2. We desperately need rain here, but all this sun makes it great weather to do this:

3. And finally, this coming Tuesday my husband and I celebrate our lucky 13th wedding anniversary. Since I'm not a jewelry fan and do not need more chocolate, we might do what we did last year and chase each other through the neighborhood. Yep, our town holds a July the 4th 5K race. Last year I finished a couple minutes ahead of him (not that I'm competitive or anything), and I think he wants a rematch.

He's going down, y'all.

Read anything fantastic this week? What are your plans for the 4th?

  1. I loved The Stand, but not a fan of vampire stories. Or zombies. I thought I might like The Walking Dead, but I couldn't get past all the violence.

  2. I read The Passage back when it first came out. I liked it but didn't love it, and knew there was no way I was going to remember everything for the second book. Now that all the books are out, though, I might go back and give The Passage another try.

Have a wonderful anniversary and 4th of July!

  6. I'm not a vampire-book fan, but that's a nice comment about Cronin's writing. Happy Anniversary, and have a great time chasing each other!

  7. I love that you beat him by a lot last year. Happy anniversary.

  8. Happy anniversary! Glad you found a good vampire book to read. I haven't found good vampire fiction since my friend Declan Finn wrote "Honor at Stake" and I learned from that book a method of generating mass quantities of holy water....

    Blessed Friday to all,

  10. Happy anniversary! Any chasing done by my wife and I would be in very slow motion and in all likelihood I'd catch her before she caught me.

I like the cover to City of Mirrors--the book kind of sounds to my taste as well.

  16. Have a happy anniversary. I did a long kayak trip yesterday, exploring some new places in a nearby marsh. (Photos, I'm sure, will follow).

  17. I notice there are a lot of kayaks in the harbor here lately. Sometimes they go under the old piers and find interesting stuff. Happy anniversary!!!

  20. That trilogy sounds as though it would keep me up at night for a week! *Brrrrr....!*

I love kayaking! The last time I was going across Narragansett bay (Rhode Island) with large boats/ships coming and going (and stupid kayakers asserting their right of way! Idiots!) when I happened to look down and notice that the water was full of large jellyfish!

  21. Congrats on your anniversary and enjoy 4th July. Of course, there are many of us in the UK who are NOT looking forward to being independent of the EU.

  23. Happy anniversary. I don't need much for gifts either. My husband makes jewelry, but I don't need it.

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
