Question of the Month with Michael G. D'Agostino

Gorgeous new badge by hopper Olga Godim

“What was the first book (or book series) you really fell in love with?”

It's hard to remember back that far, but I'll go with Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House on the Prairie series. I probably read the whole set only once, but read my two favorites, On the Banks of Plum Creek and The Long Winter, many times. The set I had was illustrated by Garth Williams, who also drew for Charlotte's Web and A Cricket in Times Square among other famous books.

I loved the Little House stories because they were about sisters (I have an older one). I also loved reading about how things were different and simpler in the past. I thought it would have been very cool to live underground (for a little while anyway), like the family does in the Plum Creek book. Plus I was a fan of the TV show.

This is a monthly blog hop. Please stop by A Life Examined to say hello to Michael and sign up!

What books from your childhood do you remember enjoying? Are you one to read the same books over and over?

  1. I loved those books and read the series over and over. My set was also illustrated by Williams and was yellow (I've seen blue ones.) I liked the TV show, too. :)

  2. The cover of that one is so charming! How could you not fall in love with it. I can't really pinpoint one book I fell in love with. I know I liked a lot of those YA romances they made back in the 80s...the Sweet Dreams books. I'd say maybe V.C. Andrews' Flowers in the Attic series...we passed that around in junior high and it seemed like SUCH a guilty pleasure!

    1. My sister got that series and I remember feeling privileged when she finally let me borrow them. They were shocking, but great stories.

    2. I loved the Little House series as well. I must have read each book more than once. And I too, read the Sweet Dreams books. I acquired several of them.We had some at our junior high school library, but they were always checked out! I only ever got to check out two of them (this is one of the things I recalled in my memoir). I also read other romance series such as Silhouette, Caprice and Wildfire. I also remember one called Magic Moments, which didn't last very long.

  3. Yes, the Little House series. I loved those, too. I completely forgot about this one. It's true that I enjoyed this one before the series I mentioned on my blog.

How did I now know about this new, cool badge? I love it!

  5. I agree, the Little House series is special in many ways, but most for me, most particularly because it's an eye-witness account of those pioneer days.

  6. I have one of the Little House books with the original illustrations. They are very different. I prefer Garth Williams' work. The Long Winter is fascinating, especially because it's well documented that it happened and the snowfall was horrendous. I was surprised, though, when I learned that the Ingalls family had boarders during that winter. They did not live alone. Wilder's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, encouraged her mother to write out the other people who lived with them because one of the points of the series was the family's independence. Yet Pa goes to the Wilder brothers and takes some of Almanzo's wheat so the family has a little something to eat, and Almanzo and Cap Garland save the day when they get wheat from the farmer who lives away from the town. 'Tis a bit of a paradox.

    Love,
    Janie

  8. For some reason I never read those as a child, but I did read them to my kids later. They are wonderful reading.

  9. I'm big on being across pop culture and the Little House on the Prarie books seem like they were popular. I might have to revisit my younger years.

  10. Oh, that's a great answer! I wrote "A Child's Garden of Verses" in response to this question on another blog, but I completely forgot the Little House books. I still reread them!

I think they're a great lesson in valuing what you have. Laura and her sisters found such joy in the smallest things.

  11. I have the whole series on DVD. I read 3 of the books to my son's on trips that we've gone on.

My answer is here: http://www.anapeladay.com/2016/07/question-of-month.html The 4th of July had me late on answering this question.

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
