N is for Operation Northwoods

If you wondered how anyone could possibly believe that 9/11 was orchestrated to get public support for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (My B post), then you might find this true conspiracy theory of disturbing interest. Or you might want to skip it.

Castro won his revolution in Cuba on January 1, 1959. The U.S. government was not too comfortable having a communist country 90 nautical miles off its coast. Some wanted to go to war to win Cuba back from the "dark side" of the Cold War. But how could these somebodies get support for such a war from the US citizens? Flyers and commercials saying "pretty please" weren't gonna cut it. Although they did try...

According to Wikipedia, in 1962 the U.S. Department of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff got an idea. An awful idea. They had a wonderful, awful idea that the CIA could sink the boats of Cuban refugees, hijack planes, blow up a U.S. ship, and other acts of violent terrorism in Miami, other Florida cities, and Washington, D.C. Then they would introduce evidence pointing the finger at Castro's Cuban government, and the American public would rally behind a war.

Luckily, President Kennedy said no way, buckaroos. This started a rift between Kennedy and the U.S. Military along with speculation that these branches of the government might have been involved in Kennedy's assassination.

Does this make you think differently of the US government or false flag operations?

  1. Interesting theory. The Missile Crisis was enough - glad we didn't go to war.

  2. People who are trained for war will always want to start one. Glad the President said no.

  3. The sad thing is, that the US has done so many things that are dodgy that things like this particular example doesn't stretch my belief too far. (Being from Africa, I'm particularly aware of destabilization activities further up north by the CIA and US corporations in order to gain access to resources.)

It's scary to think, though, that somewhere up there, there might be a few people happily gambling with innocent civilians' lives.

  4. I have to agree with Misha on this. It's sadly not to hard to imagine, scarily especially now.

  5. Tamara, It's heart breaking that the leaders and other powerful influences of the country I love is capable of doing these sorts of things. Of course, the US isn't the only country guilty of doing bad stuff. There are other countries guilty of a whole lot worse. I just wish governments around the world desired true peace and cared for the people living in their nations, instead of their own selfish interests. *sigh* Oh well in heaven things will be purrfect and for only on this earth for just a short while. Thanks for visiting Art Sketching Through the Alphabet "N" (Nightingale). Have a good week, my friend!

  6. Wag the dog...

This is a conspiracy theory that will never go away with any generation, I'm afraid.

  7. Considering some of the things the government has done in other parts of the world, I would not put it past them. Then. Or now.

  8. I haven't heard that... but to back 60 some years earlier, did the Maine blow up by itself or did Cuba do it to draw us into was with Spain?

  9. It's sad, but not surprising. And the CIA is supposed to be behind pretty much everything suspicious around the world. There is one very strong conspiracy theory here that the CIA fiddled with the Australian election back in 1975, to get rid of Gough Whitlam. Not in the same league as the destruction you mention, especially since it seems to be true in that case, but still...

  10. These conspiracy theories could stretch out in any direction you like, but at the same time I wouldn't put anything past anyone who's enjoyed a huge amount of power. For the current situation, Trump is such a loose cannon that really anything is possible.

  11. I like that you can delve into these controversial topics with confidence. If you like novels that surround the topic of the twin towers. You may like Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann.

  12. As I wrote in my notes for my books - never underestimate the power of Government to make a complete and utter mess of things through sheer stupidity. And self-interest, of course.

  13. Interesting! I don’t trust the US government, so I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they’d done something stupid and killed civilians to get support for their idiot ideas.

  14. I'm reading the comments and I realize I am in the minority. I don't doubt cunning one iota. But this is poppycock. But in our new alternate universe with alternated facts, a hare brained scheme like this could be taken seriously to probably disastrous results.

  15. Hmm, another head scratcher. While I might question this happening in the past, what's more scary is that I could easily believe our current Incompetent-in-Chief would read this, say "Great idea!", and off we'd go into a war with Korea.. or Canada... or something equally ridiculous... :(
