Celebrate the Small Things

It seems I was typing up last week's post approximately five minutes ago. Time is zoomin', y'all! Shouts to our hostess with the mostest, Lexa Cain and her rockin' good cohosts: L.G. Keltner and Tonja Drecker.

Things to celebrate this week:

1. Extra-special delivery last night!!  (No, it wasn't a baby. Bite your tongues!)

Not only is this 700-page doorstop (Yay! I love long books) from my favorite author, but he co-wrote it with his son. Schweet!. At first I thought it might be son Joe Hill, best known for works like Horns and The Fireman, but no. Owen King is Stephen's youngest son.

2. Speaking of excellent books, I sent out a tweet about how much I loved Annie Hartnett's Rabbit Cake and the author tweeted me back! How cool is that?

Rabbit Cake is a wonderful character-driven piece about a girl dealing with the death of her mother (from sleep-walking into a river) as well as a sister also inflicted with a sleep-walking disorder. I loved the bits about Elvis (yep, that the girl's name) working at a zoo since I used to work at one myself. This book is absolutely bizarre, ridiculous enough to make you laugh out loud, and poignant enough to have you reaching for the Kleenex box. I highly recommend it.

And how did I get my hand's on this gem? I was in the library and plucked it off the shelf just to show my impatient-about-to-drag-me-out-by-my-hair daughter the cover. Her favorite animal is--you guessed it--rabbits. Then I read the blurb and brought it home.

What's the best thing you've read recently? Are you a Stephen King fan? Ready to dive into Sleeping Beauties?

  1. I'm reading the new King book now! And did you know Joe Hill has a book coming out in October? I believe it's called Strange Weather and it's actually four novellas. :)

  3. I think we forget that authors are people and many of them are on Twitter. And they appreciate kind words about their work. It's so easy to reach out and connect with them nowadays.

Lately I've been doing a lot of rereading. My brain doesn't want to delve into new worlds. It's temporary. I have these moods sometimes.

  4. It’s so cool she tweeted back! And SK’s book with his son? OMGosh! I can’t wait to get it.

  6. Looks like you have some great reading there! I do like Stephen King, though I enjoy his non fiction even more than the fiction. And the short stories more than the novels. It's amazing what turns out to be by him, such as a Twilight Zone episode I was discussing with my nephew recently. The remake, of course, not the 1950s series. And he's writing with his son now? Great! I recently picked up a piece of historical crime fiction by historical novelist Thomas Keneally and his daughter Meg. There's a whole new generation coming up to give us pleasure...

  9. I like the look of that Stephen King book; I’ve not read one of his for ages. I feel a book purchase coming on!
I’ve just finished reading The Silent Kookaburra by Liz Perrat, a wonderful book and well worth a read if you haven’t already.

  10. Awesome that you connected with an author whose book you loved. I nominated one for the Cybils awards once and it won. I was so excited!

  11. I need to catch up on recent King, I've not read a new one of his for a while. Clearly it's a talented family. Great that you heard back from that author, and yay for random library discoveries!

  12. How wonderful that the book arrived (I always see that like Christmas :) ) I'm awed by King's writing but am too much a chicken to read his books.

  15. I got f Sleeping Beauties on my night stand too! I'm looking at it horrified because it's SO MASSIVE! a book like that for a reader with a chronic DNF condition like mine it's like a casket for a claustrophobic! LOL!!! I admire the fact that you like long books! :) Hope you enjoy it Tamara!

  16. Good reads! I've been reading a lot more lately and not writing enough reviews. Michael Herr's "Dispatches" is the best book I've recently read. He was a journalist in Vietnam in late 67 through 68 and his writing captures what the soldier experiences.

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
