Celebrate the Small Things

It's Friday! Are you ready to celebrate something? Then let's get this party started. Thanks to our indestructible host, Lexa Cain, and her co-hosts: L.G. Keltner and Tonja Drecker.

Wow, it's been about a month since I posted for CTST. I've been trying to carve out more time for writing. However, time seems to be harder than diamonds and free time can be about as hard to come by.

But I digress. Let's celebrate:

The kindness of strangers.

Last week, Mother Nature dumped 14 inches of snow on our part of the world. I love snow. I love lots and lots of snow. However, my kids were scheduled to rehearse their play at 10 a.m. that morning, so I had to drag my sleepy behind out of my warm bed to shovel at 7 a.m. on a Saturday. I know. Boo-freakin'-hoo.

Now the snow was light and fluffy, so I caught a break there. Still, it took me thirty minutes to carve a 4-foot wide path down the driveway to the bottom where the big-boy city snowplows had left a wall of solid snow and ice approximately 20 feet wide, 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Yeah, living on the corner sucks this time of year. The wall was so big I wondered if Wildlings and Whitewalkers were lurking on the other side.

As I started to chip away with my shovel, a truck came by with duel snow-plows on the front, the kind of vehicle people hire for snow removal on their driveways. This guy stopped and with two swipes of his plow, he knocked that wall of ice all the way into my lawn. Ba-BAM! Forty minutes of back-breaking labor done in seconds.

I was so stunned I just stood there and waved, grinning like an idiot. So THANK-YOU wonderful snow plow driver, whoever you are. You saved my butt. I would have never finished shoveling on time otherwise.

Has a stranger ever helped you out when you least expected it?

  1. I'm cold just reading about all that snow. :)

Yeh for the goodness, the kindness of strangers!

  2. That was really nice of him.

I was happy to cheer on your manuscript yesterday. I hope the pitch opened up even more options for you. That wonderful story needs to be published.

  3. Wow! That is awesome! What a good stranger! Kindness between strangers is too far and in between now and it's always heart warming to hear a story of a random act of kindness like this.

  4. You're such a great mom. I'd have looked out the window and then called and offered up regrets on making it to rehearsal.

People are nice. There are a few per every hundred that stink bad enough to taint everything, but for the most part, humans are pretty awesome creatures.

  5. Hopefully someone else can jump in with the Friday posts.
What a cool thing to do. He's probably the one who plowed it into your driveway in the first place.

    1. Nah, the big city plows are distinctly different from these guys. Most drive their own trucks. But I shouldn't get too grumpy with the big plows as without them I couldn't drive so easily through the city. It's just bad luck that the ice chunks get dumped where they do.

  10. Yes, I was on my way to my mother’s home with a bottle of wine in hand. I tripped and fell over right on th corner of her street, smashing the bottle. Two ladies helped me up and, seeing I was somewhat shocked, told me not to worry about the bottles, they would clear up the bits. That’s the kindness of strangers!

I recently discovered crystals and reading up all about it so it was a shock to see the chart with the stones here!

  14. That's wonderful! We haven't gotten much snow at all this year, so far, so are wondering if it will continue into drought or if we'll get slammed the next two months. We'll see!

  15. How nice that he did that! Yes, a group of teen-age boys helped me off the exit ramp from a freeway when they saw my car had stalled and wouldn't start again. (Long story about why.) I didn't know them at all, but they pushed my car to a safe shoulder where I could call a tow truck. And then they went on their way. It was so nice of them.

  16. At least twice we've had a snow plow guy drive by and make a special effort to help us. Those mountains at the end of driveways are back breaking.

  20. Fourteen inches?? Ugh. I'm from Wisconsin and I don't miss those days one bit. We get one inch around here and I'm crying.

  21. What a wonderful guy! I've been helped by strangers lots: one paid for my meal at a nice restaurant (that was a fantastic surprise); another offered to proofread my books for free after discovering a typo; and I've had several return items I've left behind or lost, including my wallet.

Always thankful for the kindness of strangers.

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
