Celebrate the Small Things

Hello and happy Friday. Today we take a moment to celebrate the small things with our host Lexa Cain, and her co-hosts: L.G. Keltner and Tonya Drecker

It's been a busy week here. I'll have both girls home until September 7, when they finally go back to school. This week it's all about birthday, birthday, birthday. My youngest turned 10. We celebrated on Wednesday with a trip to our favorite restaurant, The Melting Pot, and today she is having a spend-the-night party with a few loud, excited friends. (Some of us, particularly the cat, will celebrate the end of these festivities.)

We like to pick a theme and this year it's Under the Sea. Here's a peek at the decor:

It's a little dark, but we've got blue, green, and purple streamers with a school of 10 silver fish made from cardboard and wrapping paper.

It's not a party without balloons! The ribbons are supposed to represent coral (red), seaweed (green), and water (blue). The fish is supposed to be a fish.

The jellyfish turned out pretty cool. This is just a large, plastic fruit bowl ($1) turned upside down, covered in a toddlers' play skirt (also $1), string, and streamers. Thank you dollar store!

Here's our "touch tank" filled with decorative stones and toy creatures that grow in water. Dollar store again.

Here we have coloring page fish printed from the internet decorated with markers and more streamers. The "coral" on the bottom are pipe cleaners.

Do you decorate for parties? Have any awesome themes to share?

  6. That Jelly fish is awesome! I'm going to share your ideas with a friend of mine that goes nuts with birthday parties for her little ones. My kids are 14 and 9 now, so theme parties haven't been around for some time.

But, for my 9-year-old son's last birthday party, my daughter and I drew the Happy Birthday banner across several sheets of paper. Each letter was on a full page and we decorated the letters with swirls and circles and other goofy colorful drawings. Then we hole-punched the Happy Birthday banner and hung it up across our living room. I swear it was better than any store-bought banner we ever had. My daughter, who loves drawing, is doing this now for her friends birthday parties.

Happy Birthday to your little ones!

  9. How FUN! I love your decor and your theme. I got to go to The Melting Pot for the first time earlier this year for our wedding anniversary. It was awesome! I'm definitely going back.

I will do everything in my power to visit commenter's blogs unless I've been abducted by aliens or my children get sick. (If my children get abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
