Question of the Month with Michael G. D'Agostino

Today's question is thus:

“If a friend came to you looking for advice on starting a blog, what three pieces of advice would you give them?”

1. Run away from your computer right now.
2. I mean it.
3. Why are you still sitting there?

Okay, maybe not. But I did just finish the A to Z challenge and my brain is slightly fried. (And here I am, blogging again, already?)

Seriously though, here's what to do:

1. If you want to get 20 comments, go out and give 40 comments.
2. Having trouble finding blogs? Steal Click on people in the comment section of other blogs.
3. Join bloghops. This will give you a topic, a built-in audience, and a schedule. I only do bloghops these days. And volunteer to cohost. This will bring even more traffic to your blog.

You can start by joining this bloghop! Click here for A Life Examined.

  1. Though I do kind of like your first set of advice points, the real advice is exactly what I did when I was starting out blogging. It just seemed like common sense to me, but I'm amazed how many people who start a blog never seem to understand this even when they are repeatedly reminded of it.

  2. Ha! :)

    Congrats on finishing A-Z!

I really liked what you said about giving 40 comments to get 20, and clicking on bloggers who leave comments. Good stuff!

  3. Great advice! The A to Z Challenge taught me you really need to work at your blog if you want people to read it. Posting regularly helps too. I haven't really got my head around Bloghops yet, I must investigate. Thanks for the tip.
I have another blog here: Around My Kitchen Table

  4. If you're reading this and you're the one asking - LISTEN TO HER FIRST SUGGESTIONS!
    LOL
    So true, great advice! :)
Congratulations on finishing the A to Z!

  5. Ha! I laughed at your first three.

And I love your tip about leaving 40 comments to get 20. That is so true!

  7. LOL. I'm kind of agreeing with the first three after just finishing the challenge. The second set is good advice too.

  8. I started doing the first one on your list during the A-Z challenge. Wow, the second one, the one about using the comment section to find other blogs is a great one! I'm having withdrawal from the A-Z. I also got the urge to blog today.

  10. All good advice. In my experience, blogging is like everything else, you have to work at it and give a little to get something back.

  11. You have great advice. I hate that you have to make 40 comments to get 20 back, but it's so true.

  13. lol your first 3 are dead on.

As are your last 3, as that is what one has to do when they dive in.

  14. LOL at the first set of advice! I think just after the A to Z ends, we all feel that way...
Definitely good advice, though! If you want comments, you have to give them first.

  15. It was interesting because it was so close to the end of A-Z, but it is an easy post to write. I was wondering if people would bother this month.

  16. Lol, I just told a friend of mine yesterday that my brain is too fried to answer the question :) The second set are great tips for meeting new bloggers!

  17. #1 is so true!!! And if you're thinking about participating in a blog hop, don't do it unless you're going to do #1. I actually only do IWSG now because few people visit other people in blog hops. It's just not a very good use of my time.

  18. Excellent tips. The thing with bloghops is that it only really pays off if you STILL visit 40 blogs to get 20 comments. Sucks, but it's true.

  19. Sorry for my lateness.
Love this post; the tips are good too.
I've stolen, I mean, visited other blogs' commenters before. That's good advice.

I solemnly promise to visit the blogs of all commenters (unless I'm abducted by aliens or my children get sick. If my children are abducted by aliens, I will be very busy, of course, catching up on my sleep.)
