O is for Owl Worship

The conspiracy theory: Once a year, the richest men in the world gather at a place called the Bohemian Grove to worship at the scaly toes of a gigantic owl statue.

Here's some factual tidbits from Wikipedia:

Bohemian Grove is a 2,700 acre campground in Monte Rio, California owned by a private men's club known as the Bohemian Club, and they do host an annual get together of bigshots from businessmen, university presidents, media moguls, and U.S. government officials including ex-presidents.

They're not supposed to conduct business on these retreats, but the Manhattan Project was discussed in 1942. Military officials and J. Robert Oppenheimer were present.

The notion of owl worship comes from their Cremation of Care ceremony where they release their worries and embrace fun. Along with pyrotechnics, there was a recording inside the statue to dictate the ceremony. Guess whose voice was used for several years? Walter Cronkite.

Sounds like fun to me. Who do you think might attend these days?

    1. Oooh, that's a pretty signature flare! Might I borrow it? (Not for my comments here, but perhaps elsewhere...) :)

  8. I agree with Diane and Lexa – boys will be boys and all that. I’m not sure who might attend, but I guess they would have to be powerful and elite. As I’m neither of those things or a boy I doubt I will be attending. :)

  9. Owlfest retreat - neat. Hindus actually revere snowy owls because the goddess Laxmi rides around on one. A goddess that the bigwigs of business would probably be comfortable having at the retreat because she's the goddess of megabucks.

  10. Owls are interesting creatures, maybe worthy of worship. Who knew business leaders would be in that group.

  13. Tamara, Owl worshiping. I am always amazed how groups like this tend to worship the creation instead of the Creator. Interesting. The over-sized owl would be rather neat to see. Thanks for visiting my Art Sketching Through the Alphabet “O” (Owl) post. I'm playing catch up!

  14. Well owls are supposed to be wise! And the owl is said to be Goddess Lakshmi's vehicle. Incidentally, my L-post was on Lakshmi!

  18. Well, owls are pretty cool, so I can see why they might. But I agree with A Tarkabarka Hölgy above! It's never great for the masses when the rich and powerful get together in secret to plan "for the good" of the rest of us...
